Your Bicycle Tours Packing Guide To Maintenance & Repair Tools
If you are undertaking a commercial bike tour, that is well supported, then there is a good chance that you won’t need to carry any bicycle repair tools on your trip.
However, it is always better to be self-sufficient, so a little knowledge about the workings of your bike, will always stand you in good stead.
If you are doing a self-guided bike tour then we would highly recommend that you learn the art of bicycle repair and maintenance.
There are books devoted to the topic or alternatively practical short courses, that you can access, to learn these important skills.
Just make sure you have a handle on the material BEFORE you start your cycling tour because you don’t want to be stuck somewhere wasting precious travelling days whilst you learn on the job.
At the very least know how to change or patch a tire
If you are a little unconfident then it may be a good idea to take a bike repair book with you, on your adventures.
Every independent cyclist (or small group) should be packing a well-equipped bike maintenance and repair kit.
It is often more economical to buy a pre-packaged repair kit and add to it rather than buying every item separately … then again it depends on the quality you are looking for in your bike repair toolkit, pre-packed kits may not be as good quality but can still meet your needs.
The tire patching kit is generally stored in a tool bag which is located under your bike saddle. The large tools will need to be stored in your panniers, in a place where they can be readily accessed.
If you are taking your own bikes on your cycling tour then make sure you give them a complete maintenance overhaul a few weeks before you set off. Resolve any issues before you leave.
